Operator of Australia’s first regulated online casino, Lasseters Holdings, has warned the Federal Government that with approximately 20 new online gaming sites being established globally each week, the cost to the Australian community of searching for, monitoring and blocking these sites would the high.

In a submission to the federal government’s study into banning interactive gambling, Lasseters Managing Director, Mr. Peter Bridge from qq online , said the rapid growth of the industry and the potential integration of non-gambling services with gaming sites complicate the feasibility of effectively blocking online content.

The community would ultimately pay to find the proverbial needles in the haystack, he said.

Higher ISP charges, slower Internet performance, accidental blocks on legitimate sites and reduced confidence in electronic commerce would result from having to filter the billions of online access requests in order to find the online gaming sites.

It is unlikely that any filters would ever be 100 percent accurate also, because international online gaming operators in particular are often hidden within portals that also offer non-gambling services.

Mr. Bridge said Lasseters is investigating the reverse of this trend by making its considerable investment in its call center and financial transaction technology available to non-gambling organizations within Alice Springs.

We are considering a portal for electronic commerce for Alice Springs businesses which, for these small businesses, would provide a low cost entry to the Internet and a new way of servicing customers in remote parts of the country, he said.

However, it raises the question of how could a ban on online gaming differentiate between the provision of gambling and non-gambling services within the one site Our understanding is that it could not.

Mr Bridge said the high cost of monitoring and policing the Internet would be better invested in regulation and consumer education, and in problem gambling support services.

Gaming machines in venues and clubs are recognized through current research as the major cause of problem gambling in Australia, he said.

There is no research available on the specific correlation between gaming on the Internet and problem gambling.

If the Government spent as much time and money looking for ways to curb problem gambling with gaming machines as it is in targeting online gaming, then we would probably greatly reduce the incidence of problem gambling in our society.

The major eight steps in establishing a profitable small business website Internet presence are. . .

1) Analyzing current and possible future true customer base.  You must know who your online audience will be before you can appeal to them.  You have to define them as precisely as possible in the hope of understanding the way they seek online.

2) Brainstorming to find key words your true customers will most often use when searching the web.  Everyone representing your enterprise who has knowledge of the Internet and meets your current customers on a regular basis can and should help during this critical step.  Filter the resulting list of keywords by using them on Internet search engines to find who your competition is and what they are up to. 

3) Collect the physical assets (domain name(s), web host, etc.) to begin designing.  This process is mostly my responsibility.  I have found an extremely reliable and inexpensive web hosting company.  I know what software, training, and domain names are necessary to create a highly visible, attractive website.

4) Design with search engine visibility, ease-of-use and attractiveness in mind.  There are many search engines each with their own methodology for ranking sites but only a few are important.  You cannot satisfy them all.  I design with the top four (90% of Internet searchers use one of the four) in mind.  Furthermore, each your customers’ online physiological comfort must be considered always.

5) Execute the design.  The complexity and size of your website dictate the time needed before your site can be completed.  Even small business websites must be designed with a minimum of five pages before submitting to search engines for listing: once again, size matters.

6) Further site visibility by promoting both on and off the web.  Once the domain name has been chosen, you must begin to place it everywhere practical.  Your website must link to other related but non-competing Internet  sites.

7) Gather feedback from online customers concerning the website’s usefulness.  The most important step you can take to enhance repeat business.  If the site never offers anything new, how many times would anyone check back?

8) Monitor website statistics and maintain.  The Internet is a dynamic media.  You will want to update content and keep it fresh, to know your site is up and running at least 99.5% of the time, and what your site’s position is on the major search engines.  You will want practical ways to measure it’s impact on your bottom line.
